How to use the California DMV Fee Calculator

  1. Pick your transaction type — new registration, used-car purchase, annual renewal, or bringing a vehicle in from another state.
  2. Enter the vehicle value — for used cars, use the purchase price; for renewals, the DMV depreciates it automatically (the calculator uses the current market value).
  3. Add your model year and fuel type — 2020+ zero-emission vehicles pay a $121 Road Improvement Fee at renewal.
  4. Enter your county fee — this varies by county (typical: $1–$27). Check your last renewal notice.
  5. Select late days if you missed the deadline — CA DMV does not offer a grace period.

Frequently asked questions

Does DMV refund registration fees in California?

The California DMV generally does not refund registration fees once paid. Limited exceptions exist: duplicate payments, verified DMV errors, and total-loss vehicles that qualify for a partial VLF refund service ($28 processing fee). File the request within the same registration year.

How does California DMV calculate registration fees?

The CA DMV stacks several line items: a base $76 registration fee, a $34 CHP fee, a Vehicle License Fee of 0.65% of the vehicle's purchase price or current value, a Transportation Improvement Fee that scales from $33 to $231 by value, plus your county fee and any applicable weight fee. Zero-emission vehicles from model year 2020 or later pay an additional $121 Road Improvement Fee at renewal.

What is a weight fee for the California DMV?

The weight fee applies to commercial vehicles (pickups used commercially, trucks, tractors). It is calculated from the vehicle's unladen or declared gross vehicle weight (GVW) and the number of axles. Standard passenger cars, SUVs, and non-commercial pickups do not pay a weight fee.

Will California DMV waive late fees?

The DMV does not provide a grace period and only waives late fees in narrow circumstances — typically documented DMV error, military deployment (SCRA), or a Planned Non-Operation (PNO) filed before the expiration date. Standard penalties start at 10% of the VLF + $20 in flat fees (1–10 days late) and escalate to 160% of the VLF + $200 flat when payment is more than two years overdue.
